Slow Internet and Wi-Fi Dropout Troubleshooting in Newcastle.
Slow internet, Wi-Fi dead zones, video-call dropouts and streaming problems do not always mean there is a fault with your internet provider. Netlink diagnoses customer-side cabling, router placement, Wi-Fi coverage and internal network problems for homes and businesses across Newcastle and the Hunter, then explains whether the solution sits with Netlink, the customer's IT provider or internet provider.

The difference matters when troubleshooting.
The connection coming into your property from your provider — NBN (FTTP, FTTN, FTTB, HFC), fixed wireless, Starlink or other. Speed limits are set by your plan and the last-mile technology available at your address. Netlink doesn't own or repair this network, but we can test it and document the evidence you need if a fault needs to go back to your provider.
How the router broadcasts the connection inside your building. Wi-Fi speed drops off with distance, thick walls, interference and the number of connected devices. Slow Wi-Fi in one room usually isn't slow internet — it's a coverage problem.
What's usually behind these problems?
- ›Router positioned inside a cabinet or against a wall
- ›One central router trying to cover a large property
- ›Old Cat5 or damaged Ethernet outlets
- ›NTD-to-router cable run over a long, poor-quality lead
- ›Unused internal telephone extensions on an FTTN service
- ›Too many devices on the 2.4GHz band
- ›Neighbouring Wi-Fi networks on the same channel
- ›Aging router firmware / entry-level ISP-supplied hardware
- ›Mesh Wi-Fi with no Ethernet backhaul between nodes
- ›Legitimate ISP or NBN faults — confirmed by wired testing
What Netlink assesses on site.
Depending on the symptom and the type of connection, the assessment may cover any of the following. We agree the scope with you before the visit so there are no surprises.
- Wired vs Wi-Fi speed comparison
- Router position
- Wi-Fi coverage and dead zones
- Signal interference
- Connected-device load
- Ethernet outlets and terminations
- NTD-to-router cabling
- Wi-Fi access-point cabling
- Mesh Ethernet backhaul
- Applicable FTTN internal socket configuration
- Unused extensions or possible bridge taps
- Patch-panel and rack connections
- Evidence indicating a provider-side fault
Netlink is not a managed IT service provider. Where the customer already has an IT provider or MSP, we coordinate with them on where our cabling and Wi-Fi hardware boundary sits.
Solutions Netlink can provide.
Findings guide the fix — not every assessment ends with new cabling. Where cabling or Wi-Fi hardware is the right answer, options may include:
- Router relocation
- Additional Cat6 cabling
- Hardwired wireless access points
- Mesh Wi-Fi with Ethernet backhaul
- Faulty outlet repair
- Cable retermination
- Internal socket rationalisation (applicable FTTN services)
- NTD-to-router cabling
- Patch-panel correction
- Coordination with the customer's IT provider
- Written findings for ISP escalation
Where our work ends and your provider's begins.
Netlink works on customer-side cabling, Wi-Fi coverage and internal network infrastructure. If testing indicates a fault within the internet provider or NBN network, we will explain the findings so the customer can escalate the issue to their provider. Netlink does not alter carrier-owned infrastructure unless separately authorised to do so.
How a Wi-Fi & Internet Assessment runs.
- 1Book
Fill in the form below or call us. Tell us the main symptom and where it happens.
- 2Scope call
A quick call to confirm connection type, router model and site details so we bring the right tools.
- 3On-site testing
Wired vs Wi-Fi speed comparison, router placement, coverage map, cabling and outlet checks.
- 4Findings
You get a clear written explanation of what we found — and whether the fix is with us, your IT provider or your ISP.
- 5Fix or escalate
Small fixes done on the visit; larger cabling work is quoted separately; provider-side faults escalated with our written findings.
What affects the cost of a Wi-Fi & internet assessment?
- Home or business site
- Property size and Wi-Fi coverage area
- Number of access points required
- Any additional Cat6 cabling needed
- Wall / ceiling access requirements
- Existing containment vs new containment
- Coordination with a customer IT provider
- Travel to regional locations
The assessment covers testing, on-site diagnostics and a written explanation. Any recommended cabling or hardware work is quoted separately once findings are in.

Wi-Fi & internet troubleshooting — your questions answered.
Is slow internet always the internet provider's fault?
No. Poor speeds and Wi-Fi dropouts are often caused by customer-side factors: router placement, Wi-Fi coverage gaps, older or damaged internal cabling, an overloaded home network, or the wrong Ethernet outlet being used for the NTD-to-router link. Netlink tests the customer-side of the connection first so you know whether the fix sits with us, your IT provider or your ISP.
What is the difference between the internet and Wi-Fi?
The internet is the connection coming into the property from your provider — via NBN (FTTP / FTTN / FTTB / HFC), fixed wireless, Starlink or another carrier. Wi-Fi is how your router broadcasts that connection to devices inside the property. Slow speeds over Wi-Fi in a specific room can be a Wi-Fi coverage problem, not a slow internet plan.
What do you actually test during an assessment?
The assessment may include: wired vs Wi-Fi speed comparison, router positioning and signal survey, dead-zone mapping, interference checks, connected-device load, testing Ethernet outlets and terminations, NTD-to-router cabling, mesh Ethernet backhaul, applicable FTTN internal-socket configuration, unused extension sockets or possible bridge taps, and rack / patch-panel connections. We record findings so you can share them with your IT or internet provider if needed.
What can Netlink fix on the day?
Depending on findings, we can relocate a router, install additional Cat6 outlets, hardwire wireless access points, install a mesh Wi-Fi system with Ethernet backhaul, repair a faulty outlet, re-terminate a cable, rationalise the internal socket setup for applicable FTTN services, and correct patch-panel or rack cabling. Not every fix is one-visit — larger cabling work is quoted separately.
Can you fix a fault inside the NBN network?
No. Netlink works on customer-side cabling, Wi-Fi coverage and internal network infrastructure. If testing indicates a fault within the internet provider or NBN network, we explain the findings so you can escalate the issue to your provider. Netlink does not alter carrier-owned infrastructure unless separately authorised to do so.
Do you assist businesses as well as homes?
Yes. Home and business Wi-Fi issues share many causes but differ in scale — a business assessment often covers multi-access-point Wi-Fi coverage, rack and patch-panel checks, guest vs staff SSID cabling and coordination with the customer's IT provider or MSP.
Do you work with our IT provider?
Yes. Where the customer has an existing IT provider or MSP, we coordinate with them on where the cabling / Wi-Fi hardware boundary sits. Netlink's scope typically stops at the labelled cabling and access-point mounts; the IT provider handles switch, controller, VLAN and firewall configuration.
Which areas do you cover?
Netlink is based in Boolaroo and services Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Cessnock, Port Stephens and the wider Hunter Region. Send us the site address and we'll confirm coverage before booking.
