Which relocation path is right for your property?
Every "move the NBN" enquiry lands in one of four buckets. The right answer depends on the NBN technology, the current NTD or socket position and the room where the router should live.
Where a physical move of the NBN Connection Box is genuinely required, Netlink can quote the customer-side work involved. This path is only available where permitted under applicable NBN Authority to Alter requirements — some sites will still need to be referred to your internet provider or NBN before work can proceed.
The most economical fix in almost every home. The NBN Connection Box stays exactly where NBN installed it, and Ethernet is run from the NTD to a preferred router position in the living room, study, media room or hallway central point. No Authority to Alter is triggered because the NTD itself does not move.
A clean, permanent Cat6 or Cat6A run through wall cavities, ceiling voids or under-floor pathways from the NTD to the optimal router / access-point location. Terminated to a modern keystone wall plate — no cables trailing along skirting boards, no double-adaptor mess in a cupboard.
On copper-lead NBN technologies the modem plugs into a wall socket rather than an NTD. Netlink installs new modem sockets and relocates existing ones so the modem lives where the router should be — with a dedicated single-drop from the first / lead-in socket and unused branches removed to protect the sync.
Moving the router is often simpler and more economical.
When Netlink attends a "move the NBN box" call, the first job is an honest site assessment. Nine times out of ten the customer's actual problem is Wi-Fi coverage or router placement rather than the physical location of the NBN Connection Box itself. Because NBN-supplied equipment is regulated, moving the NTD triggers Authority to Alter engagement and takes longer and costs more than the customer expects. Meanwhile, running a Cat6 tail from the existing NTD to a central router position — or adding a hardwired access point — usually solves the underlying problem in a single visit at a fraction of the cost.
Netlink will never recommend moving the NBN box when a Cat6 tail or a hardwired access point would solve the same problem for less. The site assessment is deliberately honest — we'd rather quote the cheaper fix and earn the next job than talk you into an expensive relocation.
Common Wi-Fi dead-spot scenarios
Run Cat6 from the garage NTD through the ceiling void to a central hallway or living-room location, and mount the router on an internal wall — not on a shelf in the garage where the concrete walls absorb Wi-Fi.
The cupboard door plus the plasterboard on either side is enough to cut Wi-Fi throughput in half. Either mount the router outside the cupboard (short Cat6 to a wall plate next to the door), or install a dedicated hardwired access point in the room that needs coverage.
A common builder default that puts the router at one far corner of the home. Netlink runs Ethernet to a central point and adds a mesh node or wired access point in the living zone.
Wi-Fi radiates outward like a light bulb — a corner installation wastes half the coverage into empty air outside the home. Relocating the router (or adding a hardwired access point) to a central ceiling position solves the coverage problem for a fraction of what an NTD move costs.
When is a physical NBN box relocation actually the right call?
- The NTD sits in a room being demolished, extended or converted (kitchen extension, second-storey add).
- The NTD is on an external wall that's being re-clad or replaced.
- The current NTD position no longer has a compliant 240 V power supply on a maintained circuit.
- A property purchase or long-term tenancy change makes a permanent internal relocation genuinely necessary.
- Every reasonable router-side or Cat6-tail alternative has been considered and ruled out.
Even in these cases, Netlink confirms the Authority-to-Alter path with the customer before quoting the physical move, and refers work to the customer's provider or NBN where the applicable requirements demand it.
NBN technology determines what can be moved — and how.
Each NBN technology uses different equipment. The relocation path that's possible on FTTP is not the same as on FTTN or HFC. Netlink confirms the technology on-site before quoting.
Fibre runs directly to the property and terminates at an NBN Connection Box. Physical NTD relocation is only permitted under applicable NBN Authority to Alter rules and may require your provider to raise a service request. In most cases, running Cat6 from the existing NTD to a better router location is the recommended path.
The modem plugs into a wall socket. Socket relocation, dedicated modem-socket installation and bridge-tap removal are all standard customer-side work. Line performance is often sensitive to how well the internal cabling is set up, so relocation is a chance to tidy the entire internal line.
In apartment buildings, fibre reaches a communications room in the building and copper delivers to each unit's wall socket. In-unit socket relocation is customer-side and can be performed inside the unit boundary. Work beyond the unit boundary usually needs building manager and provider engagement.
Fibre reaches a curb-side distribution point and a small NBN Connection Device sits inside the property. Similar to FTTP — physical NCD relocation follows Authority to Alter rules, and Cat6 from the NCD to a better router location is usually the practical answer.
Signal is delivered on the coaxial network to a wall outlet and NBN Connection Box. Where the NBN Connection Box sits in a poor room, Cat6 from the NBN Connection Box to a better router location is normally the most reliable relocation approach.
Property access and cable-route considerations
Where the Cat6 tail or the physical relocation actually goes depends on the property. Netlink assesses:
- Ceiling void — accessibility, manhole location, insulation depth, existing HVAC and mechanical service routing
- Wall cavities — timber-frame or cavity-brick construction, header studs and noggins that block a top-down pull
- Underfloor — subfloor height, mechanical services, moisture and pest exposure, brick pier layout
- External pathway — eave depth, weatherproof entry seals, salt-air exposure in lake/coast suburbs
- Existing conduits — draw wires, spare ways, whether a fresh conduit can be installed non-destructively
- Feature walls, tiled walls and finished ceilings — pathways that would require plaster repair are quoted separately

NTD-to-router Ethernet cabling
Netlink installs Cat6 U/UTP or Cat6A F/UTP from the existing NTD to the preferred router location, terminated at both ends onto a keystone wall plate to T568B, cable-tested and documented. The NBN Connection Box is not moved; only the Ethernet tail is added. The router (customer-supplied or provider-supplied) plugs into the new keystone in the preferred room. No Authority to Alter is triggered because the NBN-supplied equipment is not physically relocated.
Socket relocation (FTTN / FTTB / FTTC)
On copper-lead NBN connections, the modem plugs directly into a wall socket. Netlink can install a new modem socket, relocate an existing socket, install a dedicated single-drop from the first / lead-in socket, and remove unused telephone branches (bridge-tap removal) that can degrade VDSL sync. On completion, the internal line is tested and a written report is provided.
Mesh Wi-Fi and hardwired access-point alternatives
Where physically moving the router still leaves Wi-Fi patchy in far bedrooms, upstairs zones or detached buildings, Netlink deploys mesh Wi-Fi nodes or ceiling-mounted PoE access points fed by Cat6. Hardwired access points give the most predictable coverage across a large or two-storey home and are frequently a better long-term investment than moving the NBN box.

Can I move my NBN box myself?
No. The NBN Connection Box (NTD) is NBN-supplied equipment and any physical relocation must be performed by an appropriately-registered cabler working under the applicable NBN Authority to Alter requirements. Some relocation work must still be referred to your internet provider or NBN. Netlink assesses the site first and confirms which path is permitted before quoting.
Is it cheaper to move the router or move the NBN box?
In almost every home, moving the router (or running Ethernet from the NTD to a better router position) is significantly cheaper and quicker than moving the NBN Connection Box itself. Because moving the router does not touch NBN-supplied equipment, no Authority to Alter is triggered and the whole job is customer-side cabling work.
The builder put the NBN box in the garage — can I get better Wi-Fi without moving it?
Yes. This is one of the most common calls Netlink attends. The standard fix is to run Cat6 from the garage NTD through the ceiling void or roof space to a central hallway or living-room position and install the router or a hardwired access point there. The NTD stays where NBN installed it, and Wi-Fi coverage improves dramatically.
Can Netlink relocate an NBN socket in an apartment?
Yes, within the unit boundary. On FTTB apartment connections, the wall socket inside the unit can be re-terminated or relocated as customer-side cabling. Work beyond the unit boundary — for example, changes in the building's common comms room — usually needs building manager engagement and may need to be coordinated through your provider.
Can you install a modem socket where there isn't one?
Yes. On FTTN, FTTB and FTTC connections, a new modem socket can be installed as a dedicated single-drop from the first / lead-in socket. This is often combined with removing unused telephone sockets (bridge-tap removal) which can improve VDSL line quality on FTTN and FTTB.
Do you install mesh Wi-Fi or hardwired access points?
Yes. Where the router itself is already in a reasonable position but Wi-Fi coverage is patchy, mesh nodes or hardwired ceiling-mounted access points are often a more reliable answer than physically moving the NBN box. Hardwired access points fed by Cat6 give the most predictable performance across a large home.
How long does an NBN box relocation take?
Straightforward router relocations with a short Cat6 run typically complete in one visit of a few hours. Physical NTD relocation, multi-storey homes and cases needing Authority to Alter engagement can take longer and may involve a follow-up visit. Netlink confirms the expected timeline during the site assessment.
Will my internet be down while the work is happening?
There is normally a short outage during the actual re-termination. Netlink schedules the physical cut-over for the end of the visit so the customer's data plan and streaming devices are re-connected before we leave. On FTTN and FTTB, a wall-socket relocation can be sequenced so the existing socket stays live until the new socket is ready.
Do I need to contact my internet provider first?
For most router-side and Cat6 work the answer is no — the customer-side cabler can quote and complete the job directly. If the site assessment identifies that a physical NTD move is required and that Authority to Alter engagement is needed, Netlink will let you know what to raise with your provider before booking the installation visit.
